About
When my twin daughters were in pre-K, their teacher told me that kids their age really love getting hand written notes in their lunches from their parents. I was in without hesitation. If it made their day 1% better, then notes they would get. Almost immediately, I realized how fast you run out of things to say. How many different ways can one say "I love you, have a great day!"?
That's when I got the idea to draw them a picture instead. Nevermind the fact that I was not objectively "good" at drawing, they were 4 years old... who cares, right?
Fast forward to the present day... they are now currently in the 5th grade and I have never sent them to school without a daily lunch note drawing. It has served as a chronicle for everything from "nature badges" they've earned, to characters in TV shows we like to watch, to obligatory terrible dad jokes.
Over the years I've learned that that if you do something for long enough, not only do you start to get better at it, but you also gain a deeper appreciation for it. Quick little sketches have the ability to convey so much information, so much sincerity, so much emotion. The old saying, " a picture is worth a thousand words" never fails to ring true.
